AdBlockX / Help
A quieter page starts here.
After installing AdBlockX, follow these steps to enable filtering in Safari. For macOS 14, iOS 17, or iPadOS 17 or later.
Enable AdBlockX
The two extensions have different jobs: the content blocker filters pages, and the control panel lets you change settings for the current site.
- Open AdBlockX and choose your categories in Filter Rules.
- Mac: Open Safari → Settings → Extensions, and enable the AdBlockX content blocker and control panel.
- iPhone / iPad: Open Settings, search for Safari, then open Extensions and enable the AdBlockX content blocker and control panel.
- Return to the page and reload. Reload again after changing filtering settings.
Choose your filters
Ad filtering blocks matching requests and hides supported ad elements. Tracking filtering reduces matching tracking requests and has its own switch. The Chinese supplement adds rules for Chinese websites and requires ad filtering.
Rules ship with app updates, with no runtime subscription downloads. Results depend on the website and rules; not every ad can be blocked.
Make a website exception
If a site looks or behaves unexpectedly, open AdBlockX from Safari’s extensions menu, turn off filtering for that website, and reload. To restore filtering, turn it back on and reload.
Add, search, or remove domains in Website Exceptions in the app, with optional subdomain coverage. If an exception for a parent domain applies, edit that parent record.
Pause and recover
Pausing all filtering preserves your categories and website exceptions. They remain in use when filtering resumes. Reload after making a change.
If the app reports that recovery is needed or a state is unconfirmed, retry recovery in the app before changing settings. Applied rules do not mean every ad on a website will be blocked.
Not seeing an effect?
Check these settings, then compare the page with filtering paused and enabled.
- Use Safari and confirm that both AdBlockX extensions are enabled.
- Choose filter categories and make sure global filtering is not paused.
- Check that neither the current site nor its parent domain is excluded.
- Reload the page. If the status has not refreshed after first enabling, return to the app and check the extension status again.
